Consumer Electronics Powerline Communication Alliance

The Consumer Electronics Powerline Communication Alliance (CEPCA) is a non profit corporation established to promote and continuously advance high speed PLC technology to utilize and implement a new generation of consumer electronics products through the rapid, broad and open industry adoption of CEPCA Specifications.

The benefit of standardizing PLC technologies through CEPCA standards is simple: minimizing truck rolls for service providers and product returns to manufacturers. For example, if Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Sanyo, Sony, or Toshiba add PLC technology to their $3,000 TVs, they cannot tolerate high product returns, due to a $100 connectivity feature.

Today there are many conflicting PLC technologies in the marketplace, and it is unrealistic to state that one technology rise an industry standard in the next year or two. However, CEPCA members see market opportunities for PLC now, in access, audio, and video applications. The CEPCA specification is a tool, insurance to minimize the risk of product returns (or power company service calls). By standardizing PLC technology, manufacturers can simply require their PLC vendor to embed the lightweight CEPCA smart coexistence specification in its chips.

Mission & Purpose

The Alliance encourages the rapid, broad and open industry adoption of specifications developed by the organization to promote and continuously advance high speed PLC technology to utilize and implement a new generation of consumer electronics products. This goal will be furthered through the pursuit of the activities set forth below:

  • Development of specifications enabling the coexistence
    • Between in-home PLC Systems
    • Between Access PLC Systems and in-home PLC Systems
  • Promotion of high speed PLC technologies in order to achieve world-wide adoption thereof.
